Attorney General Cynthia H. Coffman Warns Immigrants About Persons Illegally Selling Driver’s License Appointments
DENVER -- Colorado Attorney General Cynthia H. Coffman revealed today that her office, in cooperation with the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) at the Colorado Department of Revenue, is investigating whether persons obtaining – and then selling – DMV appointments under the Colorado Road and Community Safety Act (CO-RCSA) are violating Colorado law.
Currently, this CO-RCSA program allows for immigrants, notwithstanding their legal status, that live and pay taxes in Colorado to obtain a state driver’s license or Colorado ID. The IDs can only be obtained at one of three DMV locations. Applicants must make an appointment in advance through the DMV’s on-line scheduler and then appear at one of these locations. The DMV does not charge for making these appointments.
“Our office received information from the DMV that a number of people were hoarding appointment times and then selling those appointments at prices that range from $50 to as high as $1000,” said Attorney General Cynthia H. Coffman. As a result, said Coffman, “We need people who have been victimized to come forward so we can identify these unscrupulous individuals and businesses who are profiting from a free government service. Anyone engaged in this scam should cease their activity and immediately cancel any scheduled appointments they’ve reserved.”
Consumers who have “purchased” an appointment with the DMV for a driver’s license from another individual or business should file a formal complaint with the Attorney General here. They can also provide information or tips – to either English or Spanish speaking investigators - by calling the Colorado Consumer Line at 1-800-222-4444.
The Attorney General advised that individuals hoping to apply for these special licenses or IDs can make a free appointment online at the DMV’s appointment scheduler: https://www.colorado.gov/apps/jboss/dor/online/appointment/scheduling/index. Once in the scheduler, they should select the orange button labeled “CO-RCSA SB251”. There is no charge for making an appointment.
